Sexual addiction

Addictions

We have all heard the term sex addict and have laughed at jokes about nymphomaniacs but for some the addiction to sex is a very serious problem which can take over the life of the person with the addiction. It is an addiction which is thought to affect countless numbers of people throughout the world and one which can destroy lives, it is also an addiction which is progressive, which means that it does not go away on its own accord nor does it get better on its own.

It is important to note however that just because you enjoy sex it doesn't necessarily mean that you are or will become addicted, addiction only occurs when the need for sex becomes something you can no longer control and it turns into a dependency which begins to affect your life.

Typically sexual addictive behaviour

Someone addicted to sex will be consumed by obtaining sex constantly, until the feelings to have sex becomes so strong that it begins to take over your life. Eventually those feelings become so strong those normal day to day activities such as going to work, doing jobs around the home and even paying bills become unimportant.

Signs that someone is addicted to sex are

* Having constant thoughts of engaging in sexual activity which interfere with your normal daily routine.

* Having sex with strangers on a regular basis.

* Getting into debt due to having sex with prostitutes.

* Getting into debt due to online subscriptions to "sex chats".

* Becoming dependant on pornography magazines.

* Staying away from personal relationships in order to have anonymous sexual encounters.

* Exchanging drugs for sex.

* Becoming a prostitute for the sole purpose of the excitement it brings not for the money.

* Exposing oneself in a public place to get sexual gratification.

* Looking for sex in public places.

* Coercing others into having sex through the use of alcohol or drugs.

* Exposing oneself to the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases due to unsafe anonymous sex.

* Obsessing about sex in any way that begins to interfere with your normal daily routine or in the way you normally live.

If any of the above is happening to yourself or anyone that you care about then immediate help should be sought, there are help lines listed online which include support groups and therapy which can help the person overcome this addiction. Your Doctor should also be advised and they will be able to advise you of support groups in your particular area.
