Addictions

The harm that addiction to chemicals has on the body, the physical damage it does isn't the only reason for quitting addiction but also the harm it does to a person's mental health should also be taken into account too, as well as that of partners and relations living in the same house.

Addiction to smoking

One of the worlds most widely used legal drugs is nicotine; millions of people all over the world use it on a daily basis and spend billions every year by doing so. People use it for its calming, tranquillising and mildly mood enhancing properties; despite this it is highly addictive and has prolonged withdrawal effects such as causing anxiety, mood swings and cravings for those wishing to give up.

The adverse effects that nicotine has on our health are

* Raised blood pressure

* Causes heart and arterial diseases

* Can cause lung, throat and stomach cancer

* Can cause strokes

* Can cause serious lung disorders

* Can contribute to premature death

Addiction to solvents

Glues and some household products that give off fumes are increasingly becoming a form of abuse particularly in youngsters and teenagers due to them being readily available and inexpensive. Solvents are usually sniffed and inhalation of the fumes produces feelings of inebriation, confusion, stupor and unconsciousness. A high number of young people die each year accidentally due to experimentation with solvents but very few people actually continue using solvents but move onto using other drugs.

Addiction to cocaine

Purified cocaine is used in two main forms, powder or crack cocaine. Powder cocaine is usually mixed with other substances and inhaled through the nostrils using a rolled up piece of paper and is extremely addictive due to its ability of bringing out a great sense of well being in the person using it for up to 30 minutes after taking it.

Cocaine known as crack or rock cocaine is almost 100% pure cocaine and its effects are instantaneous, the effects of this type of cocaine are the same as when using powdered cocaine but are a lot more intense and usually the effects only last a few minutes. Crack cocaine is usually smoked in a pipe but can also be injected or mixed with a cocktail of heroin.

The adverse effects of cocaine are

* Raises the blood pressure and constricts blood vessels

* Leads to problems developing with the heart

* Hardening of the arteries

* Increases the risk of a stroke

* Destroys the cartilage of the nose

* Changes in personality such as grandiosity

* Can cause paranoia and psychosis

Addiction to tranquilisers

More and more people are becoming addicted to prescription tranquilisers which are got both from illegal sources and legitimately prescribed. A group of tranquilisers know as benzodiazepine which include Valium, Mogadon and Ativan are the tranquilisers which most people abuse and become addicted to. Long term abuse of these types of drugs can lead to a variety of problems particularly when trying to come off them.

Adverse effects of tranquilisers are

* Severe anxiety reactions

* Panic attacks

* Nightmares

* Seizures

* Hallucinations

* Feelings of fright or terror

Feelings and effects from abusing tranquilisers can often last for many weeks, months or even years and you should never stop taking them without first consulting your Doctor.
