While the effects and symptoms that are associated with giving up nicotine can be bad, it is nothing when compared to the side effects and suffering that those who are addicted to drugs can get when they try breaking the habit. Those who wish to recover from drug abuse do often need specialist help depending on the type of drug and the length of their addiction and recovering from drug addiction in any form is never easy. One of the first steps that need to be taken on the road to drug recovery is the admittance of a problem in the first place; a person can become addicted to drugs for many reasons. Some of the most common reasons people turn to drugs include problems in day to day life, a break up of marriage, or social problems and fear of not belonging. Drugs are seen as a way of escaping the problems and the surroundings but can very quickly begin to take over a person's life, leaving them with very little self-esteem left and of course endangering their health. Only when the person has admitted and realized that they do have a problem can then begin the long road to recovery from drug addiction. Very few people who are addicted to drugs can manage successful to cure their addiction solely by themselves; however there are many forms of help that those that with drug addiction and who are recovering can turn to for help. Drug recovery is hard but with determination and support from a program, friends and family members, it can be achieved successfully. A good program is worthwhile finding, attending and sticking with and is one of the most successful ways for long term recovery from drug addiction. Programs specifically designed to help those recovering from drugs include drug counseling on an individual basis, motivational therapies and psychotherapy. The beauty of motivational therapy is that it targets the person's behavior patterns and as such changes their ways for the long term future. To begin with those addicted will see a therapist on an individual basis to asses there needs and to help them understand that if drug recovery is to be successful over the long term, then changes have to be made to their lifestyle and ways of thinking. Counseling relies on two basic principles, the first being reducing and stopping drug use and then the second focusing and dealing directly with the problems that the drug addiction stemmed from in the first place. A therapist will work with those who are recovering from drug addiction and help them define goals and strategies which ensure that they don't return to their previous lifestyle of drug taking. Psychotherapy can be a great aid for those who are recovering from heroin or cocaine or any major drug and are aimed at getting those recovering to talk about their experiences and feelings. This type of therapy relies on giving the person advice on how they can successfully deal with the problems they come across in life without feeling the need to return to taking drugs again in order to deal with them.
